Notes from Henrik and Johanna Karlsson's essay Cultivating a state of mind where new ideas are born.
The essay opens with a puzzle about startup incubators. Putting founders together in coworking spaces sounds useful: more peers, more feedback, more chances for ideas to collide. Yet Sam Altman argued that Y Combinator worked partly because it did not do this.
His reason was that great ideas usually sound bad at first. In a small private group, founders can keep believing in an awkward idea long enough to discover whether it contains something real. In a crowded social environment, ridicule and status pressure act as a filter. They remove terrible ideas, but they also remove the strange ones that might have become important.
Karlsson's subject is that protected interval. Solitude here does not simply mean being physically alone. It is a state in which other people's opinions temporarily lose their grip, attention becomes more sensitive, and half-formed ideas can develop before they are forced to justify themselves.
Feedback is often treated as automatically beneficial. The essay makes a narrower argument: feedback can be destructive when an idea is too young to explain itself.
A mature idea can survive questions. A larval idea may be no more than an attraction, an irritation, an image, or a vague sense that something everybody accepts is not quite right. If it must immediately sound plausible to peers, it will be reshaped toward familiar standards. The result is often sensible work that never travels very far.
This is why the usual advice to "get feedback early" needs a qualification. Early feedback is useful for correcting execution. It can be lethal when the thing still being discovered is the premise itself.
Alexander Grothendieck entered elite French mathematics at a disadvantage. He had spent part of the war in an internment camp, studied at the unremarkable University of Montpellier, and lacked the training his Paris peers had received. He found them quicker and more technically fluent.
But between the ages of 17 and 20, that lack of access forced him to work from first principles. Dissatisfied with textbook definitions of length and volume, he tried to derive better ones himself. Much of this work had already been done decades earlier. His mentors later regarded the effort as wasted.
Grothendieck did not. Reinventing known mathematics had taught him something the curriculum could not: how to follow a question without permission or reassurance. He became familiar with the movement of his own thought and developed confidence that did not depend on consensus or fashion.
Karlsson's point is not that ignorance is inherently productive. Grothendieck eventually learned the field, found mentors, and collaborated extensively. The useful part of his isolation was that he entered the mathematical community with an internal compass. He could use its knowledge without simply inheriting its limits.
His talented peers produced beautiful work inside an established context. Grothendieck's distinctive ability was to notice that the context itself might be wrong or incomplete.
The essay's strongest idea is that originality often appears in choosing the problem, not solving it.
Grothendieck's peers were better at answering questions. He was unusually willing to remain with things that puzzled him, including things others considered elementary, settled, or bizarre. Instead of quickly translating confusion into a respectable problem, he watched it. That patience allowed different and more powerful questions to surface.
"What is length?" looks naïve only after you accept the standard machinery around it. Similar naïve questions eventually led Grothendieck toward schemes, topoi, and K-theory.
This kind of attention is inefficient if the goal is to produce answers on schedule. It includes dead ends and redundant work. But some apparent waste is practice in sensing how your own thought evolves. A person who always receives a well-formed problem never develops the same ability to find one.
The essay is not a case for permanent isolation. Serious work requires teachers, collaborators, criticism, existing knowledge, and an audience.
The problem is sequence. Solitary work lets a person learn what undiluted curiosity feels like. Once that feeling is familiar, it becomes easier to distinguish genuine interest from the desire to impress a group, follow a fashion, or protect one's status.
Grothendieck could join the mathematical world without surrendering to it because he already knew the shape of his interests. He chose mentors and collaborators who strengthened his work rather than flattening it.
This also explains why the quality of the social environment matters. Solitude protects against conformity, but the right collaborators can do something better than merely leaving an idea alone: they can refuse the familiar and help pull each other toward unexplored territory.
Ingmar Bergman's notebooks show how hard this state is to maintain after success.
From 1955 to 2001, Bergman kept loose working books in which daily frustrations could turn without warning into dialogue, images, monologues, and scenes. The fragments gradually became films. The notebooks had little of the order expected from finished work.
Karl Ove Knausgaard described the necessary move as going "sub-Bergman": below the famous director's name, reputation, standards, and self-image, into a place where nothing had been fixed yet. In that space an entry could be talentless, commonplace, offensive, boring, or unexpectedly alive.
That freedom was not incidental. If Bergman judged each fragment as the author of *The Seventh Seal*, many fragments would never survive long enough to connect with anything else. The workbook suspended the demand to be Bergman so that new Bergman work could emerge.
He reinforced this with routine. At the height of his career, he wrote in the workbook from nine to noon each day and stopped when the clock struck, even in the middle of a sentence. Repetition made the notebook a reliable entrance into a nonjudgmental state rather than another public performance.
The essay collects several methods used by artists and thinkers. They differ in form, but each weakens the pressure to make an idea immediately acceptable.
These are not universal productivity tricks. A ritual works only if it helps create the relevant quality of attention. The test is not whether the routine looks disciplined, but whether it makes the mind less eager to censor, explain, and conform.
Maxim Dorofeev describes a closely related mechanism in his lecture Jedi Technique 2.0. The lecture places "Brainstorming and the Rabbit Principle" immediately before "The process of evaluating ideas": first produce many possibilities, including nonsense, and only afterward switch into analysis.
The separation matters because generation and evaluation ask the mind to do opposing things. Generation needs loose associations, permission to be wrong, and enough momentum for one weak fragment to trigger another. Evaluation looks for errors, cost, plausibility, and fit. Both are necessary, but running them simultaneously lets the evaluator kill each fragment before it has a chance to connect with anything else.
This gives Karlsson's argument a more operational form. Solitude, Bergman's uncensored workbook, Knausgaard's speed, and Dorofeev's brainstorming phase all create a temporary ban on judgment. They do not reject criticism. They delay it. The work moves through two passes:
1. Generate: write whatever appears, without requiring it to be sensible or defensible.
2. Evaluate: return later, when there is enough material to compare, combine, discard, and develop.
The important boundary is not between creativity and rigor. It is between applying rigor at the right time and applying it so early that there is nothing left to evaluate.
A new idea often needs two incompatible conditions.
First, it needs privacy. There must be a period when it can remain unclear and unimpressive, when nobody asks for a pitch and the creator does not ask whether it fits their reputation.
Later, it needs contact. Knowledge, criticism, collaborators, and craft turn private intuition into work that other people can use.
The failure modes sit at both extremes. Constant exposure kills ideas before they form. Permanent isolation leaves them untested and disconnected. The harder skill is moving between the two without letting the social world reach backward and rewrite the earliest stage of thought.
The essay's most useful reversal is that confusion is not always a defect to eliminate. Sometimes confusion is the perception that the current question is too small. Solitude gives that perception time to find words.
